Drysdale causes upset

Drysdale caused the upset of the season and did its finals hope no harm at all with a win in round 11 of Geelong Bowls Region Pennant competition on Saturday.

Although Drysdale still sits in sixth place, its seven-shot win against Ocean Grove 1 kept it hot on the heels of Bareena, which also had a win against third-placed Queenscliff.

Matt Flapper’s rink had a nine-shot win for Ocean Grove while Peter Loe and John Fry played out a 19-all tie.

It was Ashley Rees’ rink of Aaron James, Mark Wellwood and John Monahan that flipped the match upside down with a 26 to 10 win to claim 13 of the 16 points on offer.

Ocean Grove is still in second spot on the ladder despite having dropped its past two games.

Bareena kept its spot in the top five with a 17-shot win against Queenscliff.

Ben Wilding had the biggest win of the afternoon with a 25 to 11 triumph.

City of Geelong kept its slim finals hopes flickering with a one-shot thriller over Ocean Grove 2.

On the other hand, the loss probably means the Grovers are out of finals action.

City won two of three rinks in a close-fought match with Nicholas Craven and Lance Kelly both emerging victorious.

Eastern Park retained fourth spot against a gallant Lara.

The Parkers won by three shots despite losing two rinks.

Lara almost got its second win of the season with Karl Weil and Michael James Kelly both winning, however Stephen Young’s 12-shot win made sure of the overall result for Eastern Park.

Highton stayed on top of the ladder, but didn’t have things all its own way against Bell Post Hill, getting home by 10 shots.

Dan Priddle and Scott McLachlan won for Highton while Ben Toner made sure Bell Post Hill at least got two points from the contest.

The competition now takes a break over Christmas and returns on January 14.
