BPCA home in a thriller

Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association recorded a seven-run victory against South West Cricket Association in round one of Melbourne Country Week on Monday February 13.

On a good batting track at Geelong, BPCA made 258 after being sent in.

The Pirates were dismissed in the 49th over, leaving seven balls on the scoresheet.

Anglesea opener Simon Umbers made 22, Jan Juc’s Luke Edwards played well for his 58 and Barrabool’s Ed Morrison put the finishing touches on the innings with 61.

Barrabool seamer Brad Greenwood also chipped in with 24 late in the innings to help BPCA register a sizeable total.

South West was in trouble early during its run chase, slumping to 2/31 with Jan Juc quick Nicky Smith snaring two early wickets.

However, captain Simon Harkness always loomed as the dangerman for South West.

The Heytesbury Rebels opener batted through the innings and even at 7/190, his side was never out of the game as long as he was still there.

Heytesbury Rebels teammate Paul Vogels launched a counter attack with a hard-hitting 32 not out, but the final total was a bridge too far for South West, ending at 7/251 when its 50 overs ran out.

Harkness made a superb 112 not out.

Smith, Anglesea leg-spinner Joey Lynch and Morrison each took two wickets and Umbers held onto four catches.
