Low numbers forces Grubbers out

Ocean Grove will be without a senior women''s team in the AFL Barwon competition in 2020.

A lack of numbers have abandoned plans for an Ocean Grove senior women’s football team in 2020.

Low attendances at weekly training meant the club was forced to withdraw its nomination for a team.

“Not enough numbers, so unfortunately team nomination (has) been withdrawn,” club senior women’s coordinator Darren Taylor said.

The Grubbers had completed preseason training sessions at Bellarine Secondary College’s Ocean Grove campus prior to Christmas.

The Voice visited club training in late November where Grubber senior women’s footballers urged the local sporting community to get behind its push to field a side for 2020.

Throughout January and February the Grubbers re-commenced preseason two nights a week at the junior Bellarine Secondary College campus.

Last month, AFL Barwon released the opening two grading rounds of the 2020 Epworth senior women’s season fixture which starts on Sunday 5 April.

Ocean Grove was scheduled to meet Thomson in Round 1 and Barwon Heads 2 in Round 2.

In 2018, the Grubber women made finals in the Division Two competition in its inaugural season.

Last season, Ocean Grove were promoted to the more competitive Division One competition and remained winless after 12 rounds.
