Helping birds of prey

Bellarine Landcare Group (BLG) is holding a birds of prey live display to increase awareness of the new quick-kill rat and mouse baits pose.

This display will be presented by Martin Scuffins from Leigh Valley, Hawk and Owl Sanctuary, accompanied by his birds. He will share his knowledge of the lives of these important birds and their role in our landscape.

“A majority of the public are quite unaware of the deadly impact posed to our birdlife by these single feed ‘quick-kill’ baits so readily available on the shelves of local hardware stores,” said Kate Lockhart, President of Bellarine Landcare Group.

“As top order predators many birds of prey include rats and mice in their diet, and are indirectly impacted by these poisons.”

“This event is a great opportunity to see some birds of prey ‘up close’, learn about their lives, and what we can do to protect them.”

Nick Carter, from Deakin University, will also share his PhD research into the impact these ‘quick-kill’ baits (technically ‘Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides’ – SGARS) are having on powerful owls.

The show is at Marcus Hill Hall on Wednesday March 9 at 6.30pm.
