Families from as far as Queensland gathered at Ocean Grove main beach for a sand sculpting competition run by AP4CA (Australian Parents for Climate Action).

More than 100 families registered for the event on April 2 and more than 60 braved the rain to participate.

AP4CA said it created the event because it wants politicians and community leaders to see that the Bellarine, Surf Coast and Geelong communities value their beautiful area and want help to protect and preserve it.

AP4CA volunteer, nurse and mum Jacqui Dunn said she loved the spirit of these events and that she was motivated to join the group because she was concerned about the future for her teen and wanted to engage in some easy, fun and community minded action.

“Our group is made of parents, carers and kids from all walks of life,” she said.

“I am not a political expert or an expert on the environment, but I absolutely love where we live and want to help protect our beautiful country and community, and give my child the best future possible.

“I think every parent wants that for their child, and we know that if we act on climate, the financial and health benefits for our community are exponentially substantial.

“We hope to make the sand sculpting a yearly event so get your spades and buckets ready for next year.”

AP4CA Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast ran a colouring competition to engage the kids through the holidays and, in May, will run the second annual dog walk for climate.
