THE Federal Government provided $2380 for Ocean Grove Coastcare this month to help rejuvenate the local coastline.
The funding is part of a $37,405 grant to six coastal groups in the marginal seat of Corangamite, two months before the Federal Election.
Ocean Grove Coastcare president Frances McAloon said the grant will go towards local dune works, starting on 29 May.
Ms McAloon said Coastcare would concentrate on dunes at 16W and 17W beaches, which have been degraded by erosion, fires and illegal parties.
“We really need to get in and do some rubbish and weed removal, and replanting,” she said.
The government contributed a total of $743,900 in Landcare grants, through the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, for local coastline works.
Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the funding would support community involvement in enhancing coastal areas.
“It will boost community engagement and provide tangible on-ground outcomes,” he said.
The grants will be available to public and private landholders and farmers.
Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said she was delighted the government was supporting local community groups.
“Corangamite CMA has a great track record in managing projects that consistently deliver good environmental outcomes in southern Victoria,” Ms Henderson said.
