Entries are now open for Surf Coast athletes to participate in a popular Anglesea running event.

The Surf Coast Centaury hosted by Torquay-based event company Rapid Ascent is an ultra-marathon along the Great Ocean Road on Saturday, September 16.

General manager Sam Maffett said the ultra-marathon included a 50-kilometre and 100-kilometre solo race and a 100-kilometre relay team race that began and finished in Anglesea.

“It’s nice to see people coming down to explore this area of the coast when they might not otherwise see it on foot,” he said.

Mr Muffat said some of the ticket proceeds would go towards local groups like Friends of Eastern Otways and Bethany Community Support.

“It’s appropriate and good for people who are doing their first ultra-marathon,” he said.

“It’s a varied course with a lot of great variety of landscapes and places that provides a great sense of journey.”

Mr Muffat said he was glad to run the feel-good ultra-marathon for its twelfth year and welcomed anyone who wanted to participate in signing up.

“I really look forward to the atmosphere on event day, the enthusiasm of spectators and supporters, and the smiles of accomplishment when people cross the finish line and complete their goal,” he said.

The Surf Coast Shire Council supports the event, and Mayor Liz Pattison said it was a perfect chance for people to come and explore the region.

“We want to see events that encourage people to stay longer and appreciate and care for this place, particularly in the off-peak season and the Surf Coast Century ticks this box,” she said.
