Local footballer Lucy McEvoy has landed an NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nomination after her impressive debut.
The 18-year-old, from Wallington, starred in her first AFLW game earlier this month, finishing with 12 disposals, five marks and four tackles in Carlton’s 34-point win against Richmond.
The former Sacred Heart student showcased her versatility playing across the midfield and forward line in front of a crowd of more than 15,000 at Melbourne’s Ikon Park.
Carlton AFLW coach Daniel Harford said he was thrilled to see McEvoy receive top performance honours.
“Lucy has been sensational since arriving at Ikon Park,” Harford said.
“She had a great pre-season and looked right at home against Richmond in round 1.
“I can’t wait to see her take her game to the next level throughout the years to come at Carlton.”
The Blues’ debutante grew up in the Bellarine, starting her football career as a junior at Ocean Grove Cobras, followed by St Mary’s and the Geelong Falcons.
McEvoy captained the Falcons for multiple seasons and has been an All-Australian for three years.
She was also named Vic Country’s most valuable player at the conclusion of 2019 NAB AFLW under-18 championships.
Carlton took McEvoy with pick No.2 in last year’s NAB AFLW draft after she nominated Melbourne metro as her preferred destination.
The cousin of Hawthorn premiership ruckman Ben McEvoy, McEvoy is the sixth AFLW rising star nominee in Carlton’s history.
