Prospective indoor bowlers are encouraged to attend Ocean Grove Senior Citizens on Tuesdays and Fridays for a game.

At the Fridays beginners session, volunteer instructors Corrie and Percy Butterworth are on hand to offer tips and advice on all aspects of the game.

Before playing in friendly games, they supply cheerful special coaching focusing on bowlers’ deliveries, rules, as well as skills exercises.

“Everyone really enjoys it, and when they get to grips with it, they don’t want to go home,” Percy said.

The club’s newest member is Nick Whitworth, who is 35 and also plays lawn bowls, and joined the Friday beginners’ group.

“I’m excited, it’s an event that’s been on my list for some time to play summertime indoor bowls,” he said.

“I especially enjoy socialising and making long-lasting friendships.”

Club secretary/treasurer Dianne Sapwell, also a keen bowler, said most people still have the perception that bowls is an older person’s game.

“But I disagree – there’s a certain amount of skill involved, but anyone of any age can always learn new skills,” she said.

“Indoor bowls is a great way to get some exercise, meet new people, and have some fun.”

The sessions include coffee, tea and biscuits and are on Tuesday or Friday afternoons at Ocean Grove Senior Citizens Centre, 101 The Terrace.

Club membership is for a financial year and as a member you are entitled to join in on a variety of other activities such as the stamp club, cards, book group, snooker, bingo, chess, chord clubs, Thursday social group, art classes and other special activities that happen throughout the year at no extra cost.
