Bumper weekend in store

A treasure hunt and roving performers will help welcome shoppers and visitors back to central Geelong this weekend in a springtime celebration hosted by the City of Greater Geelong.

Mayor Stephanie Asher said council is working with local businesses to encourage shoppers, residents and visitors into Central Geelong for the Welcome Back weekend.

“Our message is that we’ve missed you and we want to welcome you back to Central Geelong,” she said.

“It’s been an incredibly tough 19 months for our community, so we want to celebrate the easing of restrictions and encourage everyone to come back and experience the things we love about our community.

“This is one of the many initiatives we’re holding to help Geelong businesses bounce back at the most important trading time of the year.

“Whether it’s arts and culture around Little Malop Street or watching the crew from Total Events put the final touches on our floating Christmas Tree, there’s so much to rediscover in Central Geelong.”

Across the weekend you can expect picnic circles, delicious food offerings, on-street entertainment and Instagram worthy pop-ups.

The City of Greater Geelong will hide 50 mini hearts around the city for a treasure hunt that’s focused on Central Geelong businesses. Those who are lucky enough to find a heart can hand it in to claim their prize, including coupons and admissions to businesses.

You can also show your love for the city and go into the draw to win the ultimate picnic hamper by snapping your selfie with the Love Central Geelong Frame and the hashtag #lovecentralgeelong.

Residents can join in the fun shouting a ‘Welcome Back Weekend’ across their rooftops.

Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan said there will be live entertainment across Central Geelong, from acoustic tunes to roving performers.

“Geelong’s heart is still beating strong and we’re going to bounce back bigger and better from the pandemic,” he said.

“Bring your family and friends to enjoy free music, including roving performers and tunes at four special pic locations. Head to Johnstone Park, Customs House, Steampacket Gardens and Transvaal Square to enjoy a socially distanced picnic in the beautiful city you’ve missed.”

Register your interest to attend the weekend and you’ll win a free gift.
