Bellarine Catchment Network (BCN) hopes its new volunteering website will boost environmental volunteering across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

BCN launched the new website coinciding with its regular community volunteering event, Borough Coastcarers. Borough Coastcarers dedicate their time twice a month to regenerating coastal moonah woodland habitat in Queenscliff.

The launch was attended by Nikki McKenzie and Norm Stanley, who represented the Wadawurrung, Kurnai and Wotjobaluk Traditional Owners and held a smoking ceremony and didgeridoo performance to officially welcome the volunteers to Country.

BCN developed the ‘Bellarine and Geelong Environmental Volunteering Calendar’ (BGEVC) with the intention of raising the profile of the 35 environmental groups and organisations that operate in the Geelong and Bellarine region.

BCN’s aim was to create a simple online platform that would showcase these groups and organisations and any activities or opportunities that are available for local people to contribute their time.

BCN Sustainability and Circular Economy Coordinator Rebecca St Ledger coordinated the program and is excited for the future.

“The BGEVC is a game changer for the way the BCN network groups and organisations promote their important work and communicate with each-other, as well as with the wider community,” she said.

“We are so pleased to have finally been able to provide this much-needed resource for the BCN network and public.”

The BGEVC was made possible by funding from the Victorian government as part of the Port Phillip Bay Fund 21/22 and developed by Geelong web designers Elk Creative.
