Africa is coming to Geelong with a new exhibition showcasing art, installations, and multimedia works from African artists.
Geelong African organisation Bantu Collective will launch the 54 Art Fair at the genU Gallery at 4 James Street on April 1 and will be open daily from 10am to 5pm from April 2 to 25.
Curator Ngoni Dzashe said diversity and representation were important in art and that he was excited to showcase African art in Geelong.
“With most artists, it’s a hard career to get recognition for. So, it’s amazing that we can showcase some of their talent,” he said.
“The exhibition comes from a love of culture and wanting to have the African culture be a part of what’s already here in Geelong.
“Collaborating with the artists and showcasing their talents is at the core of this event. It gives me joy to be part of the whole process…and the launch is a combination of exciting and daunting.
“We’ve got pieces from different arts and people from across Africa…and I’m looking forward to seeing new audiences enjoying different art pieces and the thought processes behind the art.”
Mr Dzashe said the 54 Art Fair highlighted Africa’s 54 countries with works showcasing the continent’s rich diversity.
The exhibition features work from Geelong and international artists, a mix of traditional and modern art styles, art displays, music, and interactive and cultural workshops.
