Again this week fishing options have been plentiful with lots of locations firing and the fish are hungry.
Garfish have made their presence known inside Corio Bay with anglers starting to find some better numbers of fish starting to get around.
Land-based fishing has been productive with areas such as Cunningham Pier, North Shore, Grammar School, St Helens and Lineburners are all great areas to have a go. A thick burley trail is key with tiny baits suspended under a pencil float.
The outer harbour continues to produce some huge calamari with reports coming through of anglers landing some absolute monsters. Size 3.5 jigs have been super effective with natural colours as of late proving to be the standout. Shallow water again is the zone to be with water as shallow as 1 metre.
King George whiting remain a popular target species for anglers between St Leonards and Queenscliff, and as we always mention, fishing the stronger tides definitely help. Pipis and squid are always a good bait when chasing a feed of these guys.
Barwon Heads continues to provide anglers with some great fishing with gummy sharks, school shark and snapper. Fishing the reef edges along the 30m line is the place to be at the moment.
There are also good numbers of tailor offshore which is quite unusual to see and reports of some school bluefin tuna getting about, too.
The weather this past week hasn’t been to crash hot for tuna fisherman but with weather looking like it’s going to slightly improve it’s well worth getting out for a crack while you can.
Gone Fishing Charters has been doing well over the past months down at Portland on both school fish and barrels. The crew are only going to be there for a few more weeks so if you want to get amongst the action get in touch with Chris while you can.
Freshwater fishing is still going very well with WurdiBuloc reservoir continuing to produce some nice fish off the rock walls with redfin, brown and rainbow trout all on the chew. Shallow running jerkbaits have been the best lure to throw as of late.
Lake Purrumbete is fishing well with browns in the shallows and amongst the weed beds that surround the lake.
Bent Minnows and jerkbaits getting the job done as it’s not very deep in these areas and covered in weed. Fishing with Mudeye under a bubble float is a classic and super effective way to catch fish in this area.
