Ocean Grove has appointed Dave Farrell as coach of its men’s senior football team for the next three years.
Farrell will replace Pete Davey, who informed the club he would not coach the final year of his contract due to work and family commitments.
Farrell has an impressive resume that includes coaching Geelong Football League powerhouse South Barwon for the past five years.
Ocean Grove finished ninth in the 10-team Bellarine Football League this season, but has a strong junior foundation with the Under 14s winning the Division 1 premiership this year and the Under 16s making the grand final.
“I’m fortunate to be stepping into a club that has waves of emerging junior talent coming through – from the Cobras program at Under 14s level, through to the Grubbers’ Under 16s and Under 18s teams,’’ Farrell said.
“I’m mindful about balancing expectations – we need to understand that success doesn’t happen overnight, but there are strong foundations in place here and I can’t wait to get stuck into the role.’’
Farrell already had a connection with Ocean Grove. His wife Belinda plays netball for the Grubbers, his daughter Eve is a former netballer and sons Ted and Harry were involved in the 2022 football program.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at GFL level – my passion for the game has never waned, even through the challenges during the coronavirus pandemic,’’ he said.
“I’m just as excited by the opportunity I now have here at the Grubbers – the club and committee has a clear vision and strategy for the future that aligns with my own values and I’m looking forward to being a part of the journey.’’
Ocean Grove president Peter Smith said Farrell’s impressive track record including his time with the Geelong Falcons made him a smart choice for the club as it looks to re-assert itself in the BFL.
“Dave and his family have strong ties to the Grubbers and we’re delighted to welcome him aboard – his experience, enthusiasm and dedication at junior and senior level will be critical as we push hard to invest in our local talent and take the club forward,’’ he said.
