The City of Greater Geelong (CoGG) is inviting all members of the community to join in The Heart – A Shared Journey, a local forum discussing the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
The Heart – A Shared Journey will take place at the City’s Wurriki Nyal building from 1pm-4pm on Tuesday, May 30, and will feature Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, First Nations community elders and representatives from Reconciliation Victoria.
Mayor Trent Sullivan encouraged everyone to come together to discuss the community’s shared journey toward reconciliation.
“It will be a chance to share stories and discuss the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and how we can all walk together into the future,” Mayor Sullivan said.
Supported by the City’s Kilangitj Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the event will centre around discussions led by a First Nations circle of leadership.
The circle of leadership will include journalist Uncle Charles Pakana, Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and Custodian of Language and Knowledge Corrina Eccles, chief executive of Reconciliation Victoria Nicole Findlay and CoGG’s senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy Officer Julie Saylor Briggs.
The Uluru Statement of the Heart, developed in 2017, called for constitutional and structural changes concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ relationship with Australia including enshrining a First Nations voice in the Australian Constitution.
The Greater Geelong Council supported the Statement from the Heart via a letter to the Prime Minister in March 2021.
The Heart – A Shared Journey is free to attend, but bookings are essential. For more information visit www.eventsgeelong.com.au.
