Surprises in nature

Barwon Heads community members can uncover the secrets of their environment during this year’s nature festival, with many activities available.

The Barwon Heads Nature Festival will run from Monday September 22 to Friday September 26, at Barwon Coast Discovery Centre, with a program packed with walks, talks, rockpool rambles and kids’ activities.

Friends of the Bluff president Jon Duthie said the festival was in its third year and featured many activities for kids to participate in during the first week of school holidays.

“Barwon Heads, the wetlands, the estuary, the Bluff, beaches and dunes are all in our backyard and they’re extraordinary places for nature,” he said.

“I’ve been doing walks around the Bluff for a long time, and the number of times locals turn up and go for a walk around the Bluff and then say to me, ‘I didn’t know any of that’, is really interesting.

“The walks will finish up with questions and conversations about climate and environmental change… and it’s an opportunity to share some messages about the environment with the visiting community.”

Mr Duthie said the Barwon Heads environment was “full of surprises” and that he was glad to show people the region’s hidden beauty.

“The idea of the festival is to help people connect and get up close and intimate with their local environment,” he said.

“Every time I look closely at the Barwon Heads environment, I get surprised and see something I haven’t seen before.

“Everybody goes up to the Bluff and looks at the view and then miss the thousands of plants and animals that make up that view.”
