A re-elected Morrison government will provide an additional $5000 per year to every surf life saving club to purchase beach safety equipment.
Announcing the move, which includes Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Barwon Heads 13th Beach, Torquay, Jan Juc and Bancoora surf lifesaving clubs, Senator Sarah Henderson said Surf Life Saving Australia and its volunteers across Corangamite electorate play a critical role keeping people of all ages safe at our beaches.
Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said the funding was an important step toward decreasing the number of drowning deaths.
“Tragically, there were 294 drowning deaths over the past year across Australia’s coastline, inland waterways and pools,” she said.
“That is 20 per cent higher than last year and 8 per cent higher than the 10-year average.
“We know how popular our patrolled beaches and waterways across our stunning coast are and the important role our local SLSA volunteers play when it comes to keeping us safe.
“This commitment of funds to better equip six of Corangamite’s surf life saving members will help ensure the safety of people in and around the water.”
Liberal for Corangamite Stephanie Asher welcomed the funding.
“Surf Clubs are such a vital part of the fabric of coastal Corangamite, keeping residents and visitors safe in the water year-round,” Ms Asher said.
“This significant investment will ensure our volunteers can continue their outstanding work.”
