Sections of river unsafe

Barwon Coast is warning people not to swim in certain sections of the Barwon River at Barwon Heads due to a possible blue-green algae outbreak.

Affected areas are around the Pelican Court boat ramp and between Ozone Jetty and the bridge.

Contact with blue-green algae can cause skin rashes, eye and ear infections, vomiting and diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, sore throat and asthma symptoms.

People should avoid eating shellfish or fish caught in contaminated water. Anyone experiencing a reaction should seek medical help.
