MP to talk scamming

Corangamite MP Libby Coker will host a public meeting next week to combat scams, which are becoming more prevalent in the region and costing Australians up to $33 billion per year.

“I know from people who are coming to my office having been caught up in scams that this problem impacts people of all ages and social groups,” Ms Coker said.

“Scams can be diverse in nature, including fake parcel deliveries, fake phone warnings, sham crypto-currency and false invoicing targeting small businesses.

“That’s why I’m hosting a public meeting to discuss this issue and provide useful information to help people fight back against online financial scammers.”

Ms Coker said the Labor Party had recently announced a comprehensive plan to combat scammers

and rip-off merchants.

“I’ve invited my colleague shadow assistant treasurer and shadow financial services minister Stephen Jones to address a community meeting on Labor’s plan,” Ms Coker said.

“I’ve also asked Victoria Police leading senior constable Robbie Noggler to talk on the challenges posed by scammers and how the police are working to warn and protect people.

“People deserve to have the support and protection of governments to fight back against this insidious form of crime, ripping them off through no fault of their own.

“My public meeting is open to anyone interested in this important issue.”

The meeting will be held at the Grovedale Footbll Netball Club from 10.30am on Thursday.

Registration is essential at libbycoker.com.au/scams.
