Members of the public can attend a free informative event focused on personal safety and aged care in Portarlington this week.
The Safety and Care information session, held at Portarlington Senior Citizens Club from 1pm on Friday, September 13, will focus on legal rights surrounding family violence and accessing aged care and the NDIS.
The two-hour session will feature two speakers, family law specialist Marlene Ebejer and the Wish Group director Deborah Penglase.
The principal lawyer at her own firm, Ms Ebejer worked in community development before becoming a lawyer and has since been a university lecturer and written books on family law and legal ethics.
She has also been actively involved in the Law Institute of Victoria’s legal aid task force and is often appointed as an independent children’s lawyer by the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.
Ms Ebejer said she would present a wide range of topics around family violence and personal safety.
“I’ll talk about family violence and stalking laws, victims of crime and how to get assistance,” she said.
“I’ll also talk about what you can do if you think something’s going wrong in someone’s household or their personal life.
“It will delve into what you can do to protect yourself and to help protect others in the community, looking into some of the agencies and laws and how to get them to assist you.
“It’s for everybody, not just women. It’s really good for anyone to hear this information.”
Walk-ins are welcome, or sign up at the Portarlington Senior Citizens Club.
