Isla McNamara has won the Torquay Lions Peace Poster competition for her artwork that celebrates everyone coming together in peace.
The Year 5 Lisieux Catholic College student’s poster was declared the winner by the Torquay Lions Club and will be judged at the district level.
“Peace is when everyone comes together and celebrates their differences,” Isla said.
Lion Neil Roche said Isla’s poster and words were particularly relevant to the current time, given the devastation in places like Gaza and Ukraine.
“Peace Posters is a Lions International competition and this year’s theme is Dare to Dream,” he said.
“Teacher, Holly Moody has inspired these budding artists and they have dared to dream.”
Two more Lisieux Catholic College students Kate Mathews and Lusi Lyle also received merit awards for their posters.
Mr Roche said winning the competition or receiving an award was not why the children entered their posters, but they did it to have fun.
The international competition winner will be awarded US$5000 and a trip to an award ceremony in Chicago.
The Torquay Peace Posters are on display at the Torquay Medical Hub in Cylinders Drive for the next few weeks and at the Cowrie Market’s Lions BBQ on Sunday, November 19.
Well-known local artist and Peace Poster judge Natalie Martin will also be at the market to help showcase the winning posters.
