Two teenagers who were attacked by a shark at Ocean Grove main beach around 7pm yesterday were lucky to escape with their lives after a local family rescued them from the water.
The teens, believed to both be 15, one male and one female, were pulled from the water where the Hobbs family sprung into action.
Diane Hobbs, who is a former trauma nurse, attended to the teens, applying a tourniquet to the girl’s leg to stop the bleeding from a large bite mark.
Two off-duty volunteer lifesavers were also at the scene and helped.
“There just happened to be a couple of surf lifesaver volunteers that were on hand as well who helped carry them up,” Peter Hobbs told Today this morning.
“I got on the phone and called the ambulance and Di went into nurse practitioner mode and did what she did.”
Mr Hobbs praised the couple’s son, James, who was one of the first responders in the water to help the victims.
The teens were admitted to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition.
Ambulance Victoria said the girl suffered lower body injuries and the boy reported minor injuries.
The beach is closed while surf lifesavers are scouring the area.
