Empowering Women across Geelong

The Geelong community will be able to learn about the state’s gender equality situation from a trailblazer in the realm during a formal speech.

Empowering Women 50/50 Network’s inaugural annual oration will be delivered by Victoria’s Public Sector gender equality commissioner, Doctor Niki Vincent, from 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 9.

Women in Local Democracy convenor Jenny Wills said Dr Vincent played a significant role in the Victorian Gender Equality Act in 2020.

“I’m very keen to hear what Niki has to say about plans for the future because, although there are gains that have been made, some of these issues are just hard to shift,” she said.

“She’s our first gender equality commissioner, and she’ll be able to give an overview of what’s happening to date and what they’re planning for the future.

“It’s great to have her in our town bringing people up to date…and it’s important to recognise that, Victoria has a trailblazing legislation as it is the only state that has the Gender Equality Act.”

Ms Wills said the oration would be held at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre and was a “terrific opportunity” to honour the contributions of women across the region.

“The network itself is focused on gender equality across our communities in all the sectors, plus the goal of gender parity on councils within our region,” she said.

“If we keep going at the same pace, it’s going to be a long time before we’re really celebrating gender equality, so it’s time to reflect, learn and see how we can do better in the future.”

Attendance to the oration event is free, but registrations are essential; visit events.grlc.vic.gov.au/event/13786927 to reserve a spot.
