Barwon Coast Committee of Management Inc. manages the coastal Crown Land reserves at Collendina, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Connewarre and Breamlea.

Beaches along this stretch of coastline are popular for dog walking and for other types of beach use such as running, swimming, surfing, picnics and relaxing. These beaches also provide critical habitat for wildlife.

In recent years Barwon Coast has received strong community feedback that education campaigns are needed to support beach users to better understand dog behaviour and to keep themselves, their pets and wildlife safe at the beach.

In response, Barwon Coast has produced the You and Your Dog Sharing our Shores – Dog Training Video Series.

The series of six short videos are free to the public and provide a range of tips and advice on understanding dog behaviour, dog walking skills and how to reduce conflict with other dogs and wildlife. The videos also aim to improve compliance with dog regulations.

Manager Community Liaison and Education at Barwon Coast Maddie Glynn said education is an important piece of the puzzle when managing dogs on beaches.

“Barwon Coast, alongside the City of Greater Geelong, set and enforce dog regulations on the coastal reserve,” she said.

“Education and enforcement are an important part of ensuring the beach can be enjoyed safely by all types of users, including wildlife.”

Titles in the video series include:

• Walking on a lead

• Tips for effective control

• Dogs and shared spaces

• Expectation vs reality

• Reading dog behaviour

• Is your dog beach ready?

The session is from 9am to 11am, March 10 at the Lahey Square Rotunda in Barwon Heads. For more information and to watch the videos visit barwoncoast.com.au/dog-training-videos
