Helping provide food relief

A Geelong food relief organisation will be able to provide more food to people in need across the state as it increases its distributions.

Geelong Foodshare received $250,000 through the state government’s Community Food Relief Program to enhance its food distribution across Western Victoria and support partnerships.

Member for Lara Ella George said the funding would allow food relief organisations to continue supporting families with dignity and care.

“Together, we can ensure that no one in Geelong has to go hungry,” she said.

“With this significant investment for the Geelong community, we’re not just providing immediate relief for those who need it; we are also fostering sustainable pathways for our community.”

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said food security was important to families and that she was glad to see the region benefit from the investment in food security.

“This funding will assist Geelong Foodshare in their vital role to provide support and enable families to continue to put healthy meals on the table,” she said.

Other food relief groups that received funding included $97,000 for Wathaurong Booln Booln Cultural Centre and $54,500 for Norlane Community Centre for both groups to employ staff.

The Common Ground Project also received $48,000 to deliver training programs, along with $19,500 for Outpost Geelong to improve its program delivery.

The $9 million Community Food Relief Program has doubled in funding this year to deliver more fresh and nutritious meals across the state.
