Nominations are now open for Geelong’s 2026 Youth Council.
Giving young people the chance to participate in decision-making processes that can impact the whole community, Youth Council serves as the official voice of Greater Geelong’s youth.
Made up of 11 people aged between 12 and 17, the Youth Council was first established in 2019.
Meeting monthly, youth councillors examine issues that affect young people and provide advice to Geelong council on issues such as health and wellbeing, cost of living and climate change.
Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj encouraged young people to consider nominating themselves.
“Our Youth Council program empowers young people, helps to build their skillset and confidence, and enables Council and the community to hear directly from our younger residents,” Mayor Kontelj said.
“We want to hear about the issues important to them, the challenges they’re facing and what needs to improve in the region for people growing up here.
“We need a diverse Youth Council that’s representative of the Greater Geelong community, so we encourage everyone to consider nominating, regardless of previous leadership experience.
“This is a chance to make a real difference in 2026.”
Junior Mayor Ayush Singh said the program was an incredible opportunity for young people to both develop their skills and give back to their community.
“I highly encourage young people to nominate themselves for this exciting and rewarding experience, where you’ll build confidence, make new friends, and be part of something that makes a difference,” Junior Mayor Singh said.
Nominations are open until Friday, October 3. Visit geelongaustralia.com.au/youthcouncil for more information.
