A Portarlington horse rescue charity is calling for urgent help as every horse celebrates its birthday this Friday.
The Winged Horse Equine Welfare is requesting community support to help provide a second chance for horses that have been neglected or abused, as the southern hemisphere recognises the birthday of horses on August 1.
Founder Carolyn Bischoff said The Winged Horse is a vital sanctuary that provides a haven for horses that have endured hardship.
“On their birthday, the greatest gift you can give is a second chance at a loving home… and we are at a critical juncture,” she said.
“The demand for our services is constant, but the resources to meet that demand are dwindling. Every horse we take in represents a life saved, a story of resilience.”
The charity is calling for donations to help fund the rescue and rehabilitation of the animals in its care, following the increased cost of animal feed and operational expenses.
August 1 is recognised as every horse’s birthday in the southern hemisphere, as it is used to simplify age-based classifications in racing and other activities, as birth records for all horses are not readily available.
The charity also seeks more volunteers to join the feed-out crew and help care for animals needing love and care.
