Motorists are reporting drives of up to 50 minutes from Ocean Grove to Geelong with sections of Barwon Heads Road sometimes at a standstill during peak hour.
The single-lane road has become a source of frustration for drivers with development at Warralily and Armstrong Creek contributing to the problem.
Armstrong Creek is the largest residential growth area in the state outside Melbourne.
Boom gates for V/Line trains are also holding up motorists on the road, while power-line works last week were a major cause of the extra-long delays.
The Victorian Government committed $3 million to undertake a planning study to determine the future needs of Barwon Heads Road between Settlement Road, South Geelong and Lower Duneed Road, Mount Duneed.
The study will enter phase two, which entails:
* Developing draft designs and route options.
* Discussing key issues and opportunities.
* Collecting feedback from the community on what’s important to them.
