Meg to run for Corangamite

A 24-year-old Torquay resident is hoping to inspire young people to lead the way in driving action after being endorsed as the Animal Justice Party’s candidate for Corangamite at the next federal election.

Meg Watkins said she had lived in the region her whole life and wanted to ensure “our region grows sustainably into the best version it can be for people, animals and our rich environment”.

“I am a passionate animal and environmental advocate. I realised that animal and environmental protection was my life’s calling when I was volunteering as a manager at an overseas animal rescue organisation,” she said.

“I joined the Animal Justice Party shortly after, and decided to run as a federal election candidate because I have spent my adult life feeling disappointed by politicians and the options presented to me on the ballot paper. And I know other young people feel the same way – disillusioned and under-represented.

“I hope to inspire other young people to lead the way in driving action – climate action, action for animals, and action for the betterment of humans and vulnerable populations.

“Animals are all-too-forgotten in Australia. They suffer at the hands of cruelty immensely, yet their suffering is not given a voice. We need leaders who hold the government to account when it comes to securing animal interests.”

Ms Watkins said her priorities were to advocate for an end to live animal export and animal testing, and protecting Country through rewilding and conservation of our rich biodiversity.

“We need real leadership and immediate action to protect against the harsh realities of climate change,” she said.

“I am also passionate about advocating for the protection and expansion of the NDIS, which is currently broken and letting down our most vulnerable Australians.

“I want to see the Federal Government establish an immediate and genuine treaty with First Nations Australians, led by First Nations demands and needs.

“I love our local community, and am ready to be the rational voice our locals need, and a voice for the voiceless.”

The federal election is yet to be called but must be held by May 21.
