Ocean Grove local Gwen Carbone claimed her second Australian SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) Title with a win in the Over 50s Women’s Division at Phillip Island this week.

This impressive win marks the second time the 57-year-old has topped the national podium, following her previous victory in 2017.

After a stellar performance across the three-day event, Carbone took home the title, finishing first in her category on Day Three. Despite a second-place finish in her Day Two heat, she emerged victorious on the final day, showing remarkable skill and competitive spirit.

“It feels absolutely incredible to win again after so many years,” Carbone said.

“The people here are fantastic – it’s like a real community. All the women are so supportive of each other, and it’s amazing to compete alongside such great talent.”

Adding to her achievement, Carbone rode the smallest board in her division, showing her adeptness at handling the waves with finesse.

“I went with the smallest board, so that definitely pushed my skills,” she said.

“I’m just super stoked to come first. It’s really something special.”

Carbone praised Surfing Australia for hosting an impressive and well-organised event. “Surfing Australia runs a really professional competition with excellent communication and fair judging,” she said.

“It’s so motivating to see how much effort goes into these events to ensure a fair and

enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Carbone, who took up SUP in 2011, encouraged anyone who might be interested in the sport to have a go even if it was just as a hobby.

“I’d encourage people to take a look at the sport, even if you don’t want to do it in a surfing capacity,” she said.

“You can explore lakes and riverways and it’s an accessible sport to virtually everyone. It increases core fitness and you have the freedom to go wherever you want.

“It’s a popular sport across the world. There’s not as many women doing it as men. It’s one of those things if you have a modicum of fitness, you can start.”
