Vic longboard squad named for Australian championships

The Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast regions are well represented in the Victorian longboard squad for the 2025 Australian Surf Championships, with 10 local surfers among the team of 31.

The squad, which heads to Tweed Coast this week for six days of competition starting July 22, was announced today (Friday, July 18).

Former Australian women’s champion Mel Staunton (Belmont) is the favourite for the Open Women section, with Point Lonsdale’s Bea Conroy and Torquay’s Rori Reyntjes also competing in the division.

Barwon Heads’ Ben Considine, a three-time national longboard champion, will compete in the Open Men section alongside Jan Juc surfer Nathan Rivalland.

Melanie Renton (Ocean Grove) will represent the state in the Over 40 Women, while Brian Kuit and John Lane, both from Torquay, will surf in the Over 55, Over 60 and Over 65 sections.

Torquay’s Harry Nelson (Under 18 Boys) and Jan Juc’s Bob Smith (Over 70 Men) round out the local team members.

Surfing Victoria chief executive Adam Robertson wished all Victorian team members good luck in the event.

“Longboarding is going from strength to strength in Victoria and we are proud to have one of the strongest pathways for longboard surfing in the country,” Mr Robertson said.

“The representative team that goes to the Australian Surf Championships each year is a key part of that and I look forward to following the results.”
