Rain wreaks havoc on opening day

Adam Spiby

Only three Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association matches were played in all grades on Saturday due to rain.

No games were played in A1 or A2 Grades, although two were completed in B1 Grade.

Jan Juc and Ocean Grove played a full 40-over per side contest at Jan Juc with the Grubbers winning the toss and batting first.

Adam Spiby top scored with a nice unbeaten 47 from 75 balls. He hit five boundaries while new club coach David Bullock made an immediate impact on the field with an important 34 from 35. Captain Billy Forde-Engelsman made 16 off just six deliveries to push the score up to a very handy 8/196.

Joel Powers took three wickets for Jan Juc, but it was captain Andrew Kent who bowled best, taking 2/12 from eight immaculate overs.

Jack Taylor and Brad Roberts (21) started well for Jan Juc, putting on 51 for the opening stand.

Jack Wyeth made 25 from 27, but when Taylor departed for a well made 56, Ocean Grove was able to control the tempo.

The Sharks finished their 40 at 9/172 with Jake Taylor grabbing three wickets for Grove while Tom Kent was superb with 1/16 from eight.

Anglesea won the toss and batted first against Queenscliff with eight of its nine batters getting to double figures. Only Tom Eskrigge didn’t get there, but had a good reason, being 1 not out.

Darcy Cooper and Tim Haworth each made 26 and Lochie Pretlove got 23 in the Seas’ total of 7/146. Jordan Aldrich was the only dual wicket taker for the Coutas with two.

Ned Stephens (38) and Michael Washford (22) batted well for Queenscliff, but the total proved too much being all out for 128.

Michael Harper took three wickets for Anglesea in a winning start to the season.

The only other game to finish was in C1 Grade with Surfcoast defeating Drysdale.

Drysdale made 97 batting first, but the Stingrays knocked off the runs in 20 overs with Mandeep Sing (35 not out) and Satvir Deol (32 not out) playing well.
