Essendon Football Club heads back to the Ocean Grove region next month with confirmation the club will host a local AFL training camp in December.
The Bombers took part in a four-day summer camp at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads this February and conducted training at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval at Shell Road.
Essendon had positive feedback from the local Ocean Grove community, City of Greater Geelong and support from Ocean Grove Cricket Club to use facilities at Shell Road.
Up to 70 staff including the entire Essendon playing list, coaching staff, sports science personnel and members of the football department spent four days at this year’s February training camp on the Bellarine.
Club Head of Football Operations and Compliance, Matt O’Hanlon, confirmed the Bombers would return and train at Shell Road on Wednesday 12 December as part of a two-day camp.
“We plan to have a training session (at Shell Road) in the morning on Wednesday December 12,” O’Hanlon told the Voice.
“Players may arrive on Tuesday night (day before) and they will be here until Thursday December 13.
“The details are still being finalised.”
Locally based Essendon supporter and former Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president Geoff Cunningham was delighted when he found out.
Cunningham, a Surfside Primary School teacher, said it would be great for local nearby school students to meet their AFL heroes at a club training session at Shell Road.
“It will be good,” Cunningham said.
“I like the concept and it will be great for the schools.”
