With the prediction of a dropping small swell, things didn’t look good for the third comp of the 2017/18 season for the 13th Beach Boardriders, sponsored by Rip Curl.
However the early morning surf check revealed contestable waves in the 1.5 to 2.5 foot range at Golfies.
The call was made and the comp was on.
First to hit the water was the Cadet Division who revelled in the small conditions displaying excellent skills and really pushing their boundaries. Jack Bassett, Charlie Mahoney and Isaiah Norling took out strong wins in their heats and progressed through the semis and then to the finals where they were joined by Charlie Farrer.
In the Junior Division, fresh from his trip to Hawaii, Kian Major showed great power and flow to win his heat and Charlie Farrer backed up his great form in the Cadets to win his heat. The final was a tight affair with less than two points separating first and third.
The Open divisions had difficulty in the small inconsistent surf and many competitors spent much of their heats chasing waves.
The best heat of the day was the Open A Final where there was a fierce battle between Shaun Todd and Todd Sopovski in which the lead changed several times and went right down to the buzzer when Shaun found a couple of great waves and ripped them to shreds.
Open B was a tight contest, with Marcel Laidlaw convincingly taking out his first Open event.
The Micro and Super Groms held their comp in great little peelers at Signies. It was a great day for the groms who shredded the wave showing great innovation and effort, having loads of fun pushing each other to their limits.
The boardriders’ next event will be the Australia Day Retro Comp which is an open competition with surfers competing on pre-1980 single and twin fins.
