Two in a row for for Flying Brick

Flying Brick Cider Co has done it again.

The Wallington-based business won last year’s Champion Cider category at the Sydney Royal Beer & Cider Show and backed it up this year with another gong.

The best cider category was hotly contested with judges impressed by the overall calibre of entries.

Flying Brick emerged as champion once again with its standout Flying Brick Cider Co MC, while its Original Cider was also recognised for its excellent quality, receiving the prestigious Chair of Judges Annual Prize.

“There were several gold-medal winning ciders this year that represented the top tier of quality, with a neck and neck battle for the Champion title” Chair of Judges Ian Kingham said.

“While the eventual champion product exhibited a rich traditional apple character with layered complexity and a dry, structured finish, the runner-up delivered remarkable flavour depth and a beautifully balanced combination of sweetness and acidity. Both were worthy of recognition which made this an easy choice for the Chair of Judges award.”

This year’s Beer & Cider Show saw more than 220 beers and ciders assessed, with 80 gold medals awarded, along with 12 champion awards.

Entries are judged by an independent panel, chosen for their expertise within their industry, who assess products through a blind tasting.

Products are then scored using a 20-point scoring system and measured against a pre-determined set of benchmark scores.

Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to products meeting the respective benchmark, allowing producers to compare their product against industry standards.

To achieve gold medal status, products must be considered outstanding and score at least 17 out of 20.

Gold medal products within each category are then re-assessed in a blind tasting, by an expanded panel of judges, to determine champion award winners.

General Manager of Hospitality Tim Harris accepted the awards on behalf of Flying Brick.
