Ocean Grove’s hopes of climbing off the bottom of the Bellarine Football League ladder received a boost with a nailbiting four-point win against Newcomb at Ray Menzies Oval on Saturday.
In Glenn ‘Funky’ Campbell’s 100th, and final, game the Grubbers won their third match of the season and are only about 6 percent behind the Power on the ladder.
With three games remaining, Grove faces Drysdale, Geelong Amateur and Torquay in a nightmare run home.
Newcomb has Barwon Heads, Anglesea and Geelong Amateur.
It could come down to losing margins to see which team finishes bottom.
The Grubbers led by 16 points at the 24-minute of the final term, but goals to Richie Hollins and then Josh Saltalamacchia at the 26-minute mark set the stage for a frantic finish.
Grove held on to give Campbell a fitting send off, 9.12(66) to 9.8(62).
Mitch Ward booted three goals, including a beauty in the 2nd term which saw him grab the ball out of the middle, take two bounces before slotting it home from 50 metres.
Jye Walker also kicked three and young defender Jamison Hallam continued his stellar season while Rhys Devlin played well and Craig Goodger was terrific in the ruck.
Anglesea defeated Barwon Heads by 22 points to move into the five.
Star forward Ayden Gras booted four goals in the third quarter to break the game open.
Barwon Heads is now out of the five and will be pushing it to play finals.
Torquay looks like finishing in 2nd spot after a 37-point win against Drysdale.
The Tigers are Geelong Amateur’s main rival for the flag while the Hawks are in fourth spot, but only behind Queenscliff on percentage.
Queenscliff squandered an opportunity to go a game clear in 3rd spot after going down to Modewarre by nine points.
The Warriors were simply superb with Zac May best afield, but are two games outside the five and have little hope of playing finals.
Matty McKim and Oscar Cooke were also brilliant for Modda in a stirring win away from home.
Geelong Amateur flexed its muscles with a 130-point win against Portarlington.
Mitch Day returned after suspension to boot five goals for Ammos while Nick Maishman also slotted through five and Sam Lloyd four for the flag favourites.
