Ocean Grove captain coach Paul Jubber recalled how young Grubber spin sensation Tom Beasley was distraught after the club’s Round 13 loss to Barwon Heads – three weeks before finals.
Jubber consoled the star spinner after Ocean Grove’s four-wicket defeat to Barwon Heads where Beasley took the onus for the loss after figures of 1/45 from 14.1 overs.
“All I say is Tommy Beasley is distraught tonight that we didn’t win – his growth and development this season has been amazing,” Jubber said on 23 February after the club’s four-wicket loss to Barwon Heads.
“Tommy is hurting quite badly tonight, he feels he could have played a little bit better and could have done a bit more – that is growth we probably need in Tom just take the next step to be an absolute star of the competition.
“This might be the catalyst that sets him on the path to an amazing finals we hope.”
And an amazing BPCA finals series it was for Beasley, 22, where he claimed 12 wickets across the semi-final and final.
The likeable right arm off-spinner snared match winning figures of 6/62 from 21.3 overs during Ocean Grove’s 38-run win over rivals Barwon Heads in the semi-final on 16 March.
His momentum rolled into the decider where he tore through the Anglesea batting line-up and claimed 6/47 from 18 overs.
He won the Fred Warren Medal.
“I was shattered after that loss,” Beasley said.
“But it’s all worth it now.”
Beasley had a remarkable season with the ball, he claimed 38 wickets at 19.45 which also included his 8/72 against Drysdale in round six.
He was named in a BPCA all star team for 2018/19 season.
Grubber teammates Huon Bertino and batting supremo Michael Kenneady were also named in the BPCA team of the season.
IN other developments, Jubber also hinted the weekend’s grand final victory would be his final game as Ocean Grove Cricket Club captain coach.
“Yeah I probably won’t coach next season,” he said.
Jubber paid tribute to spinner Tom Kent who missed out on a grand final berth and was named 12th man.
Kent took 22 wickets in A1 at 18.09 this season.
“To have some of that calibre not playing in our grand final side shows we have some great depth,” he said.
