Grubbers win first up

Ocean Grove proved too good for Queenscliff in the opening round of Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association A1 Grade competition.

Queenscliff won the toss and batted first and compiled a handy 9/168 from 40 overs with Frank Mileto (38) and Kane Leathem (37) getting runs.

Seamer Mick Thornton was the best of the Grubbers’ bowlers with 3/25 from eight overs while recruit Shane Van Den Nouwland picked up two wickets and Alex Mann did his job with 1/15 from eight.

Ocean Grove paced its run chase to perfection, getting the total four wickets down in the final over.

Shaun Fankhauser showed he is primed for another bountiful season with 69 while Paul Jubber played nicely for 48 while Van Den Nouwland was unbeaten on 21.

Ocean Grove defeated Portarlington in B1 Grade.

Port batted first and was dismissed in the 40th over for 115 with Dylan Thorley snaring 4/8 from six, Billy Forde-Engelsman 2/13 from eight including five maidens and Craig Byron 2/20.

Ocean Grove reached the target six down in the 27th over with captain David Turner starting the season well with a fine 59 while Nathan Taylor chipped in with 29.

Ocean Grove was beaten by Jan Juc in C Grade.

John Murphy made 42 in Grove’s total of 9/169 while Steven Bate made 27 and Adam Spiby 25.

The Sharks played the short boundaries at Bellbrae well and got the runs seven down in the 28th over with Ben Grant unbeaten on 67.

Bate capped off a fine game with 4/35 from eight and Zak Poynder took three wickets.
