Ocean Grove has produced the most stunning four-quarter display of netball to defeat Geelong Amateur in today’s Bellarine Netball League A Grade grand final.
The Grubbers were ruthless in their 53 to 45 win after going into the game as underdogs.
Ammos had lost just one game for the season, but Ocean Grove didn’t care much for form or reputation.
An all round team effort got the side over the line in front of a packed crowd at Grinter Reserve, Newcomb.
Ammos struggled to deal with Ocean Grove’s full-court dominance. Every player performed their role.
The only downside was an injury to defender Kelsey Ollis, but Rhiannon Whitson stepped in to play her role with aplomb. Ollis was one of the best players on the court when she went down. Usually a star goalkeeper, Ollis moved to goal defence this season with the emergence of Georgia Berry, who played a stunning game on Ammos champion Ruby Watson. Thankfully the injury wasn’t serious and Ollis was able to join her teammates for the celebrations.
Ashton O’Brien (13 goals) was absolutely immense as goal attack and was best on court and provided the perfect foil for star shooter Bec O’Neill, who finished with 40 goals.
Georgia Finn starred, but really, every single one of Ocean Grove’s players were huge in the biggest game of the season.
It’s been 19 years since Ocean Grove tasted premiership glory, but the celebrations will continue long into tonight and tomorrow.
