Fun and fitness for little athletes

Little Athletics is all about fun and participation. 158365

OCEAN Grove Barwon Heads Little Athletics Club was established in 1971, and has an outstanding record of personal achievements and team spirit.
The great thing about Little Athletics is it’s not about becoming a champion, although many children aspire to this height. It is about doing your best, developing good skills, building self esteem, becoming and staying fit and most of all having fun and building friendships with other athletes.
The club is open to all children aged between five and 15, who want to come down to Landy Field in Geelong and have some fun on Saturday mornings over the summer little aths season.
For enrolments and registrations, check out the Facebook page (@OGBHLittleAthletics), and in particular the ‘Age Calculator’ to determine what age group your child is in. All enrolments are carried out online through www.lavic.com.au (approximately $155 for the summer season). The portal to register opened on 12 August.
There will also be a pre-registration day at Landy Field on 24 September. The club uniform (singlet, T-shirt or crop-top) can be purchased through the club. See the ‘Uniform Shop’ tab on the website homepage www.ogbhlac.org.au to view and order. If you find that when you collect your uniform that it is the wrong size, don’t worry – you can change it on the day of collection.
For those who have never tried little aths, the Geelong Little Athletics Club provides two tryout sessions during the season for those families who are unsure or who just want to tryout on the day to see if it’s for them.
The process for this is to register at www.lavic.com.au, and it is the same process as registering but a deferred payment is available until you have decided to definitely join.
For the tryout session, the child can just wear a T-shirt and shorts of their choice, and during the tryout phase no parent duty is required unless you have an ‘ontrack’ child in under-6s or under-7s. Refer to www.geelonglac.com.au for ‘ontrack’ info.
When you’ve joined, it is a requirement that parents of athletes are rostered to volunteer duty every one in three weeks. This involves duty from 8.20am until completion of the track or field events.
The main parent duty is high jump and for your first duty day, it will all be explained and show you what is involved. For your first duty, arrive 10 minutes early so we can do some fast track training and on-going assistance.
Regular training sessions are held once a week at the club’s new home at Bop Bop Karrong at Barwon Heads Village Park, on Sundays (times may vary).

Above all, we’re all in it together to ensure our kids have another fantastic season of athletics.
