To celebrate National Threatened Species Day on Monday, September 7, local not-for-profit environment organisation Bellarine Catchment Network is inviting all six-to-12-year-olds to bring threatened species to life in their own home.

BCN has launched an art competition to celebrate our local wetland environments and the many threatened species that rely upon them.

There are many beautiful wetlands around Geelong and the Bellarine including five sites that are internationally recognised. These are called Ramsar wetlands and hundreds of countries have agreed to protect them for the protection of the plants and animals that live there.

With stage 3 lockdown restrictions still in place, children can put their attention towards creativity and environmental education.

There are two categories that participants can enter – most creative colouring-in page and most creative model of a wetland or wetland species.

Models can be made using any materials from cakes, paper, leaves, fabric, clay or even papier-mache.

Participants can enter both categories, but can only win in one. A main prize will be awarded to the winning entry but smaller prizes will be given to three runners-up per category.

Entries close at 5pm on Sunday, September 6.
