Emergency Victoria has issued multiple warnings as Barwon Heads was blasted by a ferocious storm in the early hours of the morning.

Electricity and mobile phone coverage were non-existent in the town this morning and Barwon Heads Road was closed with one driver narrowly avoiding complete disaster when a tree fell on their vehicle.

“Due to the significant weather event, there has been significant damage along the Barwon Heads road from Golf Links road to the airport,” Vic Emergency said.

Reports of trees severely damaging houses came through this morning while the Village Park was also battered.

On Hitchcock Avenue, businesses were unable to open this morning with shopfronts remaining closed.

Motorists could get to Geelong via Ocean Grove and via 13th Beach Road.

Powercor said electricity is not expected to be restored until after 3pm.

Vic Emergency gave the following advice:

Park your car undercover and away from trees.

Stay inside if conditions outside appear dangerous.

Contact family members and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the situation, if safe to do so.

When preparing your property, ensure you take appropriate safety precautions and do so well before the severe weather arrives.
